Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol (Broxidil) is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscid mucus. It helps to thin and loosen mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways and thereby relieving cough.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (30 mg) 3 times daily.
Children_2_5_years
2.5 ml (7.5 mg) 3 times daily.
Children_6_12_years

How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring cup or spoon. Drink plenty of fluids to help thin the mucus.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides directly as well as by stimulating serous gland activity, leading to less viscous mucus. It also enhances ciliary activity, promoting mucociliary clearance, and stimulates the production of pulmonary surfactant.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly through the kidneys (approx. 90% as metabolites).
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver to various conjugated and unconjugated metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any other component of the formulation.
- Severe kidney or liver impairment (use with caution).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (cough suppressants)
Concomitant use with antitussives is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the impaired cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin)
Ambroxol can increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and epigastric pain. Management is supportive and symptomatic; gastric lavage or forced emesis may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Consult a doctor. Generally considered safe during lactation, but medical advice is recommended.
