Description
Overview of the medicine
Buprocaine 0.4% Eye Drop is a topical ophthalmic anesthetic used to temporarily numb the surface of the eye for diagnostic procedures or minor surgeries.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed for the procedure. Additional drops may be administered to maintain anesthesia.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment needed for topical ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Instill drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Buprocaine works by blocking the generation and conduction of nerve impulses, primarily by preventing the influx of sodium ions through voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve membrane, thereby stabilizing the neuronal membrane.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 seconds.
Excretion
Metabolites excreted primarily via urine.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic application due to local action.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration; primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Likely metabolized by plasma pseudocholinesterases (if an ester) or hepatic enzymes (if an amide).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to buprocaine or any other local anesthetics of the same chemical class.
- •Known allergy to any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Sulfonamides
If buprocaine is an ester-type anesthetic, it may reduce the antibacterial activity of sulfonamides.
Anticholinesterase agents
May inhibit the metabolism of buprocaine if it's an ester-type anesthetic, potentially prolonging its effects or increasing systemic toxicity.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is highly unlikely with topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption. Local irritation or transient corneal damage may occur with excessive or prolonged use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
