Description
Overview of the medicine
Calac 300 mg Tablet contains Calcium Carbonate, a mineral essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and overall body function. It is used to prevent or treat calcium deficiencies and as an antacid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For calcium supplementation: 1-2 tablets (300-600 mg elemental calcium) 2-3 times daily, with meals. As antacid: 1-2 tablets as needed, up to 7 tablets daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal function. Consult a doctor for specific guidance.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary due to risk of hypercalcemia. Regular monitoring of serum calcium is recommended.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption. If used as an antacid, it can be taken after meals or at bedtime. Drink plenty of water.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate acts as a source of calcium to replenish deficiencies. As an antacid, it neutralizes stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antacid effect: within minutes. Systemic calcium replenishment: hours to days.
Excretion
Primarily renally (via urine), with some excretion in feces (unabsorbed calcium).
Half life
Variable, as calcium homeostasis is tightly regulated. Biological half-life in bone is very long.
Absorption
Absorbed in the small intestine, primarily through active transport and passive diffusion. Requires Vitamin D for optimal absorption.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the liver; elemental calcium is incorporated into bone and used by tissues.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Severe renal impairment
- Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
May impair absorption of bisphosphonates; separate administration by at least 30-60 minutes.
Iron Supplements
May reduce iron absorption; separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Thiazide Diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Digitalis Glycosides
May increase the risk of digitalis toxicity in hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
May reduce absorption of these antibiotics; separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Thyroid Hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
May reduce absorption of thyroid hormones; separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe constipation, nausea, vomiting, confusion, increased thirst, and frequent urination. In severe cases, it can lead to hypercalcemia, kidney stones, and milk-alkali syndrome. Management involves discontinuing calcium intake, ensuring adequate hydration, and supportive care. Medical attention is required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium is essential during pregnancy and lactation. This medicine is generally considered safe when taken at recommended doses under medical supervision. Consult your doctor.
