Description
Overview of the medicine
Calcin-M Tablet is a nutritional supplement containing Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc, essential minerals for bone health, nerve function, and immune system support.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Similar to adults, with consideration for renal function and other co-morbidities. Consult a doctor.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Regular monitoring of serum mineral levels is recommended.
How to Take
Orally, preferably with meals to minimize stomach upset and enhance absorption, or as directed by the physician. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless specified.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. Magnesium acts as a cofactor for numerous enzymatic reactions, involved in muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation, and is important for calcium absorption and metabolism. Zinc is crucial for immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cell division.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Long-term effect for chronic conditions, not acute relief. Benefits accumulate over weeks to months.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion (urine), with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Complex, as minerals are incorporated into various tissues; not a typical drug half-life.
Absorption
Calcium absorption is about 20-30%, Magnesium ~30-50%, and Zinc ~20-40%, depending on formulation and physiological factors.
Metabolism
Minerals are generally not metabolized by the liver like drugs; they participate in metabolic processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
- •Hypercalcemia, hypermagnesemia, hypercalciuria.
- •Severe renal impairment.
- •Conditions leading to excessive iron absorption.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
High calcium levels may increase digoxin toxicity.
Levothyroxine
May reduce levothyroxine absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Reduced absorption of bisphosphonates. Take Calcin-M at a different time.
Iron Supplements
High doses of iron may interfere with zinc absorption.
Thiazide Diuretics
May increase serum calcium levels by reducing renal excretion of calcium.
Tetracycline and Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics
Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc can chelate these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Administer at least 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, lethargy, confusion, polydipsia, polyuria, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias or kidney stones. Management involves supportive care, hydration, and correction of electrolyte imbalances. Seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended to meet increased mineral needs during pregnancy and lactation. However, consult a healthcare provider before use.
