Description
Overview of the medicine
Calcium Jayson 500 mg Injection contains Calcium Gluconate, an essential mineral vital for maintaining strong bones, proper nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. It is primarily used to treat and prevent calcium deficiencies and related conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For acute hypocalcemic tetany: Typically 10-20 ml of 10% Calcium Gluconate Injection (containing 90-180 mg elemental calcium) administered intravenously slowly at a rate not exceeding 5 ml/minute. May be repeated every 4-6 hours or by continuous infusion. Dosage must be individualized based on serum calcium levels and patient's response.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution should be exercised due to potential age-related decrease in renal function and increased risk of hypercalcemia or cardiac complications. Close monitoring is recommended.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor serum calcium and renal function closely. Dosage adjustment may be necessary to prevent hypercalcemia. Initial lower doses may be considered.
How to Take
Administer slowly by intravenous injection directly into a vein. Rapid administration can lead to cardiac arrest. Do not administer intramuscularly or subcutaneously due to risk of tissue necrosis.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Gluconate replenishes intracellular and extracellular calcium stores. Calcium plays a critical role as a second messenger in many cellular processes, including nerve transmission, hormone secretion, and muscle contraction, by regulating cell membrane potential and permeability.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes (IV administration).
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (renal filtration and reabsorption); a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 20-30 minutes, but calcium is actively incorporated into bone and has a longer physiological half-life.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed into systemic circulation following intravenous administration.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; mainly incorporated into bone and exchanged with other calcium pools.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (abnormally high calcium levels).
- •Patients receiving cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin) due to increased risk of digitalis toxicity.
- •Ventricular fibrillation.
- •Severe renal impairment (relative contraindication, use with extreme caution).
Drug Interactions
Tetracyclines
Calcium can chelate tetracyclines, reducing their absorption and effectiveness. Administer separately with a sufficient time interval.
Thiazide Diuretics
May reduce urinary calcium excretion and lead to hypercalcemia. Monitor serum calcium levels closely.
Phosphates, Carbonates, Sulfates
May form insoluble precipitates with calcium. Do not mix with these agents in the same syringe or IV line.
Cardiac Glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Concurrent use may increase the risk of digitalis toxicity and potentially lead to fatal arrhythmias. Avoid concomitant use.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and freezing. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, mental changes (confusion, lethargy), polyuria, polydipsia, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, and death. Management involves immediate discontinuation of calcium, hydration with IV fluids, loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide), and in severe cases, calcitonin, bisphosphonates, or dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed. Calcium is an essential mineral for fetal development. If used, monitor maternal calcium levels closely. Calcium passes into breast milk, but at therapeutic doses, it is generally considered safe for the infant. Consult a healthcare professional.
