Description
Overview of the medicine
Caldolin 500 mg Tablet is a calcium supplement used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency and support bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500-1000 mg of elemental calcium daily, in divided doses, preferably with meals. Maximum 2500 mg/day.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but may require higher doses due to age-related malabsorption; monitor calcium levels.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary based on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Avoid in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Provides elemental calcium necessary for bone mineralization, nerve function, muscle contraction, and other metabolic processes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, as it depends on dissolution and absorption.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces; absorbed calcium is excreted primarily via kidneys (urine).
Half life
Variable, dependent on body's calcium homeostasis.
Absorption
Approximately 20-30% of elemental calcium is absorbed, enhanced by Vitamin D. Best absorbed with food.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; it's an inorganic ion.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in blood)
- •Severe hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in urine)
- •Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or any component of the formulation
- •Renal calculi (kidney stones) or a history of recurrent kidney stones
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates. Take calcium at least 30 minutes to 2 hours after bisphosphonates.
Iron supplements
Calcium can reduce iron absorption. Take at different times.
Thiazide diuretics
Can reduce calcium excretion, increasing the risk of hypercalcemia.
Thyroid hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
Calcium can reduce the absorption of thyroid hormones. Administer calcium at least 4 hours apart.
Tetracycline and Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Calcium can bind to these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Take calcium at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe constipation, nausea, vomiting, confusion, fatigue, and kidney problems. In severe cases, it can lead to hypercalcemic crisis. Management involves discontinuation of calcium, hydration, and medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation. Caldolin 500 mg Tablet is generally considered safe and often recommended. Consult your doctor for appropriate dosage.
