Description
Overview of the medicine
Calson 300 mg tablet is a mineral supplement primarily used to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels. It provides calcium, an essential mineral for strong bones, healthy teeth, and proper functioning of nerves, muscles, and the heart. It may also be used as an antacid for heartburn and indigestion.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For calcium supplementation: 300-1000 mg elemental calcium daily in divided doses, preferably with meals. For antacid: 300-600 mg elemental calcium as needed, up to 7 g daily.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor renal function and potential interactions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required; monitor calcium and phosphate levels. Contraindicated in severe hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria.
How to Take
Orally. Tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole. Best taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. When used as an antacid, take after meals or at bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium carbonate acts as a calcium supplement by providing elemental calcium for various physiological processes, including bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood coagulation. As an antacid, it neutralizes stomach acid by direct chemical reaction, forming water and carbon dioxide.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antacid effect: 5-10 minutes. Calcium supplementation: Gradual, over weeks to months.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium excreted in feces. Absorbed calcium primarily excreted via kidneys in urine, and small amounts in sweat and bile.
Half life
Variable, depends on body's calcium homeostasis.
Absorption
Approximately 20-30% of elemental calcium is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the duodenum via active transport and passive diffusion, which is enhanced by Vitamin D.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; elemental calcium is incorporated into bone or excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)
- •Severe hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- •Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- •Hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels)
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with bisphosphonate absorption. Take calcium at a different time.
Iron supplements
Calcium can interfere with iron absorption. Take at separate times.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase serum calcium levels by reducing calcium excretion.
Tetracyclines/Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer calcium at least 2-4 hours before or after.
Thyroid hormones (e.g., Levothyroxine)
Calcium may decrease absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, polydipsia, polyuria, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias and coma. Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium, hydration, and management of hypercalcemia symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium is essential during pregnancy and lactation. Calson 300 mg can be used as recommended by a healthcare professional to meet increased calcium needs. Do not exceed recommended doses without medical advice.
