Description
Overview of the medicine
Calvimax-D 500 mg Tablet is a nutritional supplement combining Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3. It is primarily used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, supporting bone health, and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary. Regular monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels is recommended.
How to Take
Oral. Tablets can be taken with or without food, preferably with meals to enhance calcium absorption and minimize GI upset. Chewable tablets should be chewed before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for maintaining strong bones, nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gut, helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body, and supports bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional effects are gradual, not immediate. Clinical benefits for bone health develop over weeks to months.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via kidneys (urine) and feces. Vitamin D metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Elemental Calcium has no specific half-life; its levels are homeostatically regulated. Vitamin D3 has a half-life of 15-30 days for its main storage form (25(OH)D3) and a few hours for the active form (1,25(OH)2D3).
Absorption
Calcium absorption varies (20-40%) and is enhanced by Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is well absorbed from the small intestine, especially with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia
- Hypercalciuria
- Severe renal impairment
- Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- Hypersensitivity to any component
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium can reduce its absorption; take at least 4 hours apart.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce their absorption; take at least 30 minutes apart.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Digitalis glycosides
Increased risk of arrhythmias if hypercalcemia occurs.
Tetracycline and Quinolone antibiotics
Calcium can reduce their absorption; take at least 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, confusion), and severe cases can lead to renal impairment and cardiac arrhythmias. Treatment involves discontinuing the supplement, hydration, and medical management of hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended doses, especially when there is a known deficiency. Consult a doctor before use.
