Description
Overview of the medicine
Canten 1% Cream contains Clotrimazole, an antifungal medication used to treat a variety of skin infections caused by fungi, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area and surrounding areas 2 to 3 times daily. Gently rub in. Continue treatment for at least 2 to 4 weeks, even if symptoms improve.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a thin layer of cream and gently massage until it is evenly distributed. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to structural and functional impairment of the fungal cytoplasmic membrane, resulting in leakage of intracellular contents and ultimately fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief typically begins within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and urine.
Half life
Due to minimal systemic absorption, a systemic half-life is not clinically relevant for topical administration.
Absorption
When applied topically to intact or inflamed skin, clotrimazole is minimally absorbed systemically. Peak serum concentrations are usually below the detection limit.
Metabolism
Any systemically absorbed clotrimazole is rapidly metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any other ingredients in the cream.
Drug Interactions
Topical Steroids
Concurrent use may reduce the effectiveness of clotrimazole; avoid if possible.
Amphotericin B or Nystatin (topical)
May antagonize the antifungal effects of clotrimazole.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to minimal absorption. In case of accidental oral ingestion, supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
While systemic absorption is minimal, consult a doctor before using Canten 1% Cream during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks.
