Description
Overview of the medicine
Carbium Capsule contains activated charcoal, a substance used to treat poisonings and drug overdoses by binding to toxins in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing their absorption into the body. It can also be used for certain digestive issues like gas and bloating.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For poisoning: 25-100 g as a single dose. For gas/bloating: 500 mg - 1 g, 3 times daily.
Elderly
Same as adults, with caution.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed as it is not absorbed.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with water. For poisoning, it should be given as soon as possible after ingestion of the toxic substance. Do not take with milk products.
Mechanism of Action
Activated charcoal works by adsorption, a process where chemicals bind to its porous surface, preventing their absorption from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream. It does not chemically neutralize toxins but rather traps them.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes for adsorption in the GI tract).
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable as it is not absorbed.
Absorption
Not absorbed systemically; remains in the GI tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction or conditions where bowel peristalsis is reduced
- Ingestion of corrosive agents, hydrocarbons, or heavy metals (as it may not be effective or may obscure endoscopy)
- Compromised airway due to risk of aspiration
Drug Interactions
Oral medications
Reduces absorption of most orally administered drugs (e.g., antidepressants, oral contraceptives, cardiac glycosides, antibiotics). Should be given at least 2 hours before or after other oral medicines.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely due to its non-systemic absorption. Large doses may lead to constipation or intestinal obstruction. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation as it is not systemically absorbed. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
