Description
Overview of the medicine
Carbocal is a combined preparation of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. It supports bone health and overall bodily functions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required based on serum calcium and phosphate levels.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food, but generally recommended after meals for better absorption and to reduce gastric upset.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate provides elemental calcium necessary for bone mineralization, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle contraction. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and its deposition into bone.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, over weeks to months for bone health benefits.
Excretion
Calcium: Primarily via feces (unabsorbed) and urine. Vitamin D3: Excreted primarily via bile and feces.
Half life
Calcium: Varies. Vitamin D3: 1-2 months for storage form; active metabolite (calcitriol) has a half-life of 3-6 hours.
Absorption
Calcium absorption is primarily in the small intestine and is enhanced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, transported to the liver and then kidneys for activation.
Metabolism
Calcium: Not metabolized. Vitamin D3: Hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects

May reduce calcium absorption.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Bisphosphonates/Levothyroxine
Reduced absorption if taken concurrently; separate administration by several hours.
Tetracyclines/Fluoroquinolones
Reduced absorption due to chelation; administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
