Description
Overview of the medicine
Catium 275 mcg Inhalation Capsule is a long-acting bronchodilator used for the maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and as an add-on maintenance treatment for asthma.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The recommended dose is one Catium 275 mcg capsule once daily, inhaled orally using the provided inhaler device. Do not swallow the capsule.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Catium capsules are for oral inhalation only and should be used with the specific inhaler device provided. Do not swallow the capsule. Follow the instructions for use provided with the inhaler device carefully. Inhale the contents of one capsule once daily at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Catium acts as a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA). It selectively binds to M3 muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscles of the airways, inhibiting acetylcholine-induced bronchoconstriction. This results in bronchodilation and improved lung function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of bronchodilation typically occurs within 15-30 minutes after inhalation.
Excretion
Approximately 70% excreted in urine (primarily as metabolites) and 20% in feces, with a small portion excreted unchanged.
Half life
The effective half-life is approximately 24 hours, supporting once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation after inhalation, but with low systemic bioavailability (approximately 10-15%) due to extensive first-pass metabolism and low gastrointestinal absorption.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by esterases and cytochrome P450 enzymes (e.g., CYP2D6, CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Catium or any excipients of the capsule.
- Not indicated for the rapid relief of acute bronchospasm or for status asthmaticus.
Drug Interactions
Adrenergic drugs
No significant interactions with adrenergic drugs have been reported, but caution is advised with concomitant use of other bronchodilators.
Other anticholinergics
Co-administration with other anticholinergic medications may potentiate anticholinergic effects and should be avoided.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to exaggerated anticholinergic signs and symptoms such as dry mouth, blurred vision, increased heart rate. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic. Consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Catium is excreted in human milk. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
