Description
Overview of the medicine
Cebex 100 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin class, containing Cephalexin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract, ear, and bone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in 100 mg/5 ml suspension strength. Adult dosage for Cephalexin is usually 250-500 mg every 6 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless there is significant renal impairment.
Children
25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses (e.g., every 6 or 12 hours), up to a maximum of 100 mg/kg/day for severe infections. Common dose: 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml) 2-3 times daily, depending on weight and severity.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance < 40 ml/min).
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Taking with food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset. Shake the suspension well before each use.
Mechanism of Action
Cephalexin works by interfering with the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the death of the bacteria. It primarily acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
0.5 to 1.2 hours (increased in renal impairment).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalexin, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring monitoring of INR.
Metformin
May increase plasma concentrations of metformin.
Probenecid
May decrease renal excretion of cephalexin, leading to increased plasma levels.
Oral Contraceptives
Potential for reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives (though controversial).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store the suspension in the refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 14 days. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, hematuria (blood in urine), and diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive; activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis can aid in removal.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cephalexin is excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; generally considered safe during lactation, but caution is advised.

- Periodic blood counts in prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on completing the full course of therapy to prevent resistance.
- Exercise caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy due to potential cross-reactivity.
- Monitor for signs of C. difficile-associated diarrhea, especially with prolonged use.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the entire course of medicine as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not save medication for future infections or share it with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
- Shake the suspension well before each use and measure with the provided measuring device.
