Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceevit is a brand of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), an essential water-soluble vitamin known for its antioxidant properties and crucial role in immune function, collagen formation, and wound healing.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For deficiency: 250 mg to 1000 mg daily. For scurvy: 250 mg to 1 g, 1-3 times daily for at least 2 weeks. For general antioxidant support: 250-500 mg daily.
Elderly
Dosage generally similar to adults, but caution should be exercised with high doses in patients with pre-existing renal conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to increased risk of oxalate nephropathy, especially with high doses. Lower doses may be advisable.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Chewable tablets should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. It is a vital cofactor for several enzyme systems involved in collagen synthesis, carnitine synthesis, and neurotransmitter biosynthesis. It also enhances iron absorption and supports immune cell function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects for deficiency may take days to weeks to manifest.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as unchanged ascorbic acid and its metabolites. Renal excretion increases with higher doses.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days in the body pool at normal saturation, but shorter in deficient states.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, through an active transport process.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites like dehydroascorbic acid, 2,3-diketogulonic acid, and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- Individuals with hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones should avoid high doses
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of ascorbic acid may interfere with the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring closer monitoring of INR.
Desferrioxamine
Concurrent use with desferrioxamine in iron-overloaded patients may increase iron toxicity, particularly cardiotoxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
Oral contraceptives may lower plasma vitamin C levels.
Aluminum-containing antacids
Ascorbic acid can increase the absorption of aluminum from antacids, which can be problematic in patients with renal impairment.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare due to its water-soluble nature. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), headache, and flushing. In severe cases, high doses can lead to oxalate nephropathy and renal stone formation. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe when taken in recommended daily allowances during pregnancy and lactation. High doses should be avoided unless prescribed by a doctor.
