Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefadyl-DS 200 mg Suspension is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, and respiratory tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1 g twice daily, or 1 g once daily for uncomplicated UTIs. For severe infections, up to 2 g daily in divided doses. (Note: 200 mg/5 mL suspension is primarily for pediatric use)
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function. Monitor renal parameters.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose of 500 mg, followed by maintenance doses adjusted based on creatinine clearance (e.g., every 12-24 hours for moderate impairment, every 24-36 hours for severe impairment).
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Administer with food if gastrointestinal upset occurs. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to lysis and death of susceptible bacterial cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. About 90% of the dose is excreted within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in adults with normal renal function, prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 90% bioavailable). Peak plasma concentrations occur 1-2 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics due to potential cross-reactivity.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May decrease renal tubular secretion of cefadroxil, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations of cefadroxil.
Loop Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Concomitant use with cephalosporins may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect by altering gut flora and potentially reducing vitamin K synthesis. Monitor INR/PT closely.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rarely, convulsions or neurological disturbances. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent. Hemodialysis may be beneficial in severe cases, as cefadroxil is dialyzable.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefadroxil crosses the placenta. Animal studies have not shown harm to the fetus. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed after careful risk-benefit assessment. Cefadroxil is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation, monitoring the infant for potential adverse effects like diarrhea or candidiasis.
