Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceforan-DS 80 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is particularly effective against respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and otitis media.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days, depending on the infection. Not typically indicated for adults in 80 mg/5ml suspension form.
Elderly
No dose adjustment required unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, reduce dose by 50%. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, reduce dose by 75% or administer 100 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (approximately 50% unchanged in urine).
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily eliminated as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime administration.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (use alternative contraception).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
No specific antidote. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing cefixime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
