Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceftizone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is administered by injection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
0.5 g to 2 g every 8-12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Max 6 g/day.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. Reduced doses are required for severe renal dysfunction.
How to Take
For IV administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and administer slowly over 3-5 minutes (bolus) or 20-60 minutes (infusion). For IM administration, reconstitute and inject deep into a large muscle mass.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftizone inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, peak plasma concentrations reached shortly after IV or IM administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Absorption
Administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM), providing rapid and complete bioavailability.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ceftizone or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases the renal tubular secretion of ceftizone, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations of ceftizone.
Aminoglycosides
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity when co-administered. Monitor renal function.
Storage
Store dry powder at controlled room temperature (20-25°C), protected from light. Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately or stored refrigerated (2-8°C) for a limited time as specified by the manufacturer.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially neurological effects like convulsions. Management is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be helpful in removing the drug from the bloodstream.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in low concentrations; use with caution during lactation.

YesClinical Trials
Ceftizone has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for various bacterial infections. Ongoing surveillance studies continue to monitor resistance patterns and optimize treatment guidelines.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (creatinine, BUN) – especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged therapy.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase) – if abnormalities are suspected.
- Complete blood count (CBC) – for prolonged courses.
Doctor Notes
- Obtain cultures and susceptibility tests prior to initiation of therapy.
- Adjust dosage in patients with impaired renal function.
- Monitor for signs of superinfection, especially with prolonged use.
- Counsel patients on potential cross-sensitivity reactions with penicillins.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your healthcare provider.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Ceftizone generally does not impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or other central nervous system effects, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hydration during treatment.
- Avoid self-medication and only use antibiotics as prescribed.
