Description
Overview of the medicine
Cerox-A (Cefuroxime Axetil equivalent) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg orally twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For most infections, 250 mg twice daily. For more severe infections or bronchitis/pneumonia, 500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but dose adjustment may be required in elderly patients with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment necessary based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-29 mL/min, 250 mg once daily. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
Cerox-A tablets should be taken orally with food for optimal absorption. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or divide.
Mechanism of Action
Cerox-A inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, enhanced by food. Bioavailability is approximately 50-60%.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily hydrolyzed to cefuroxime in the intestinal mucosa and blood.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime axetil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant use with probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration-time curve (AUC) of cefuroxime by approximately 50%.
Oral Contraceptives
Cephalosporins may affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives.
Antacids/H2 blockers
Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may reduce the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in cases of severe overdose, although it is not typically required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in small amounts in human breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
