Description
Overview of the medicine
Cerzin is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It is also used to treat hives.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily, preferably in the evening.
Elderly
Initial dose 5 mg once daily, adjust based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Moderate renal impairment (CrCl 31-50 ml/min): 5 mg once daily. Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 ml/min): 5 mg every other day.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. For oral use.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1-receptors. It inhibits the early phase of the allergic reaction and also reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators involved in the late phase allergic reaction.

Within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.
Half life
Approximately 8-10 hours in adults, longer in elderly and renal impaired patients.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Only a small portion is metabolized in the liver to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives.
- Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 10 ml/min).
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
May decrease cetirizine clearance.
CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives)
Increased drowsiness.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, confusion, malaise, mydriasis, pruritus, agitation, and urinary retention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted into breast milk, not recommended during breastfeeding.
