Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily. May be started at 5 mg daily if symptoms are mild.
Elderly
Generally 5 mg once daily. Consider lower dose due to potential for decreased renal function.
Renal_impairment
Moderate to severe impairment: 5 mg once daily or 5 mg every other day, depending on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Blocks histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing the actions of histamine, such as itching, sneezing, and watery eyes.

Onset
Starts working within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine; a small portion via feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours in adults.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- •Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
Increased plasma levels of cetirizine and decreased plasma levels of ritonavir.
CNS Depressants
Increased risk of drowsiness and impaired performance. Avoid concomitant use of alcohol and other CNS depressants.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20-25°C), away from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include drowsiness, agitation, headache, tachycardia. Management involves supportive and symptomatic treatment. Gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; advise caution during lactation.
