Description
Overview of the medicine
Chuben-DS 400 mg Chewable Tablet contains Albendazole, an anti-parasitic drug used to treat various types of worm infections (e.g., roundworm, hookworm, pinworm). It works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugar, which depletes their energy and ultimately kills them.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal worms (e.g., Roundworm, Hookworm, Pinworm, Whipworm): 400 mg as a single dose. For Strongyloidiasis or Taeniasis: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. For Hydatid disease or Neurocysticercosis: 400 mg twice daily for varying durations depending on the condition, usually with meals.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is considered necessary for patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. It is generally recommended to take Chuben-DS with food, especially a fatty meal, to enhance absorption. For some infections, a second course may be required after a few weeks.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to beta-tubulin in intestinal and tissue helminths, inhibiting microtubule polymerization. This leads to disruption of microtubule-dependent glucose uptake, causing depletion of the worm's energy reserves and eventual death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, depends on the type of worm infection and site; typically, effects begin within 1-2 days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via bile as metabolites; less than 1% is excreted renally as albendazole sulfoxide.
Half life
Parent drug: <1 hour. Active metabolite (albendazole sulfoxide): 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (<5%), but absorption is significantly increased with a fatty meal. It rapidly undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives.
- •Pregnancy (especially first trimester).
- •Severe hepatic impairment.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
Albendazole may increase plasma levels of theophylline; monitor theophylline levels.
Grapefruit juice
May increase absorption of albendazole.
Cimetidine, Dexamethasone, Praziquantel
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide, leading to increased exposure and potential for side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage if ingested recently.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Albendazole should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy due to potential teratogenic effects. A pregnancy test should be performed before starting treatment in women of childbearing potential. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
