Description
Overview of the medicine
Citizen 10 mg tablet contains Cetirizine, a potent second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, and other allergic conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily. May be taken as 5 mg twice daily. Maximum 10 mg/day.
Elderly
A dose of 5 mg once daily is recommended. Adjust based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 31-60 mL/min: 5 mg once daily. For 11-30 mL/min: 5 mg every other day. For <10 mL/min or on dialysis: Contraindicated or consult physician.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively blocks histamine H1-receptors, thereby preventing the actions of histamine, which is responsible for allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and runny nose.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is usually within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 60%) over 24 hours. A small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours in adults; prolonged in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism (approximately 10-15%).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any component of the formulation
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min)
- Lactation (relative contraindication due to excretion in breast milk)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
A minor decrease in cetirizine clearance has been observed, but is not considered clinically significant.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Concurrent use may enhance CNS depression (drowsiness, impaired coordination). Avoid concomitant use or use with caution.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include somnolence, agitation, tachycardia, and diarrhea. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingested recently. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in breast milk; therefore, it is not recommended during lactation.
