Description
Overview of the medicine
Clamycin (Clindamycin) is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150-450 mg every 6-8 hours depending on the severity of the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is necessary, but monitor renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required in mild to moderate renal impairment. In severe impairment, accumulation may occur, so adjust dose based on monitoring.
How to Take
Take Clamycin capsules orally with a full glass of water to prevent esophageal irritation. It can be taken with or without food, but food may help if stomach upset occurs. Complete the full prescribed course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby preventing peptide bond formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, typically within hours for therapeutic effect.
Excretion
Approximately 10% of the active drug is excreted in urine and 3.6% in feces; the remainder is excreted as biologically inactive metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 2 to 3 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 45-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to active (N-demethyl clindamycin) and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin.
- •History of antibiotic-associated colitis.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
Antagonism between clindamycin and erythromycin has been demonstrated in vitro.
Neuromuscular blocking agents
Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties which may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing clindamycin from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Clindamycin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
