Description
Overview of the medicine
Clavimax-CV is an antibiotic combining amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, especially those caused by beta-lactamase producing bacteria which are resistant to amoxicillin alone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections: One 500 mg/125 mg tablet three times daily. For severe infections: One 875 mg/125 mg tablet twice daily.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor renal function and adjust dose if necessary.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. Consult prescribing information for specific guidelines.
How to Take
To minimize potential gastrointestinal intolerance, take at the start of a meal. Swallow tablets whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes, thereby extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effects begin within 1 hour.
Excretion
Both components are primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Amoxicillin: approximately 1.0-1.5 hours; Clavulanic acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Both amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are well-absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is minimally metabolized; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other penicillin antibiotic.
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with previous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid therapy.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased INR/PT reported, monitor blood coagulation parameters.
Probenecid
Increases amoxicillin blood levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
May increase the incidence of skin rash.
Methotrexate
Reduced clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing its toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional contraception.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include gastrointestinal symptoms and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin and clavulanic acid from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, use during pregnancy should be avoided unless considered essential by the physician. Both amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted into breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.

- Periodic assessment of renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function should be made during prolonged therapy.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, bilirubin) in patients with pre-existing hepatic impairment.
Doctor Notes
- Prescribe with caution in patients with hepatic impairment, monitor liver function regularly.
- Advise patients on the importance of completing the full course of therapy to prevent resistance.
- Be aware of potential hypersensitivity reactions, especially in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of medication as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Report any persistent diarrhea, severe rash, or signs of allergic reaction to your doctor.
- Take the medication at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
