Description
Overview of the medicine
Clavuxet-250-mg-tablet is an antibiotic medication combining amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One 250 mg/62.5 mg tablet every 8 hours or one 500 mg/125 mg tablet every 12 hours, depending on severity.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance; consult physician.
How to Take
Take orally at the start of a meal to minimize potential gastrointestinal intolerance and enhance absorption of clavulanic acid.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, which would otherwise inactivate amoxicillin.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily renal (urine).
Half life
Amoxicillin: 1-1.3 hours; Clavulanic acid: 1 hour.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; food enhances absorption of clavulanate.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is minimally metabolized; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of skin rash.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal clearance.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset and fluid/electrolyte imbalance. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin and clavulanate from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; monitor infants for diarrhea, candidiasis, and skin rash.
