Description
Overview of the medicine
Clindax-B gel is a topical medication combining clindamycin, an antibiotic, and benzoyl peroxide, a keratolytic and antibacterial agent. It is used to treat acne vulgaris by reducing inflammatory lesions and bacterial growth on the skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to affected areas once daily, after washing and drying the skin.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment needed for renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to clean, dry skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes. Wash hands after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, primarily against *Propionibacterium acnes*. Benzoyl peroxide provides bactericidal activity against *P. acnes* and also has keratolytic effects, reducing follicular hyperkeratosis and unplugging pores.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually seen within 2-5 weeks.
Excretion
Primarily via urine and feces for systemically absorbed clindamycin/metabolites. Benzoyl peroxide metabolites are excreted in urine.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application; systemic clindamycin half-life is about 2.5-3 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application. Benzoyl peroxide is partially absorbed and metabolized to benzoic acid.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed clindamycin is metabolized in the liver. Benzoyl peroxide is metabolized to benzoic acid in the skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, or benzoyl peroxide
- History of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
May antagonize the antibacterial effects of clindamycin.
Dapsone (topical)
May cause temporary orange-brown skin discoloration if applied concurrently with benzoyl peroxide.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical application is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. If excessive application occurs, symptoms may include severe skin irritation, redness, and peeling. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
