Description
Overview of the medicine
Clintrix-12-0025 Topical Gel contains Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and reducing inflammation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film of gel to the affected area(s) twice daily (morning and evening).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for patients with renal impairment with topical use.
How to Take
For topical use only. Cleanse the skin thoroughly before applying the gel. Apply a thin film to the entire affected area, not just individual lesions. Wash hands thoroughly after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects which are beneficial in treating inflammatory acne lesions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine and bile.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 2.4 hours (when absorbed systemically).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application. Approximately 4-5% of the dose is absorbed.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to active and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin or any component of the formulation
- History of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis)
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin topical
Concurrent use with erythromycin-containing products may antagonize the antibacterial effects of clindamycin.
Neuromuscular blocking agents
Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties and may enhance the effects of other neuromuscular blocking agents.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical application of clindamycin is unlikely to cause systemic overdose due to minimal absorption. If accidentally ingested, standard supportive measures should be taken. Contact a poison control center if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy: Category B. Limited data exist. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Lactation: Clindamycin is excreted in breast milk. Use with caution during breastfeeding; monitor infants for adverse effects.
