Description
Overview of the medicine
Clobecort 0.05% Cream contains clobetasol propionate, a potent topical corticosteroid, used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It works by reducing inflammation, itching, and redness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Do not use for more than 2 consecutive weeks.
Elderly
Use with caution, similar to adult dose but monitor for skin atrophy.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use, but systemic absorption should be minimized.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area and rub in gently. Wash hands after use. Avoid contact with eyes, face, and mucous membranes. Do not use on large areas or under occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Clobetasol propionate is a potent corticosteroid that works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. It inhibits the release of various inflammatory mediators, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes, and suppresses immune responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom relief usually within days.
Excretion
Primarily through urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Not well established for topical application; systemic half-life of absorbed drug is several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin; increased absorption with occlusive dressings, inflamed skin, or prolonged use.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver by CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clobetasol propionate or any excipients
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
- Perianal and genital pruritus
- Primary cutaneous viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, chickenpox)
- Fungal or bacterial skin infections (without concomitant anti-infective therapy)
- Children under 12 years (unless specifically indicated)
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 inhibitors
Co-administration with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may increase systemic exposure to clobetasol propionate, increasing the risk of systemic side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause acute systemic problems. Chronic overdose or misuse may lead to symptoms of hypercorticism (e.g., Cushing's syndrome) and adrenal suppression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category C in pregnancy. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Use with caution during lactation; avoid application to the breast area. Consult a doctor.
