Description
Overview of the medicine
Clotrimazole 1% cream is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal skin infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other superficial yeast infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area and surrounding skin twice daily (morning and evening) for 2-4 weeks. Continue treatment for at least one week after symptoms clear.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Cleanse and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of cream. Rub in gently. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to increased permeability of the fungal cell membrane, causing leakage of intracellular components and ultimately cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom relief within a few days, full resolution may take weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily through feces when absorbed systemically.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 0.5% after topical application)
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites when absorbed systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any component of the cream.
Drug Interactions
Tacrolimus (systemic)
May theoretically increase systemic tacrolimus levels if absorbed significantly, but highly unlikely with topical clotrimazole.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical clotrimazole is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation as systemic absorption is minimal. Consult a doctor before use.
