Description
Overview of the medicine
Clotrimazole 1% cream is an antifungal medication used to treat a variety of fungal skin infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other superficial candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area 2-3 times daily. Gently rub in. Continue treatment for at least 2 weeks after symptoms disappear, up to 4 weeks for severe infections.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area before applying the cream. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This leads to increased permeability of the cell membrane, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately death of the fungal cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief may begin within a few days; full therapeutic effect typically takes 2-4 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via feces if absorbed systemically, but largely eliminated locally for topical use.
Half life
Not well-characterized due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 0.5%) after topical application to intact or inflamed skin.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver if absorbed systemically, but negligible for topical use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any of the excipients in the cream.
- Do not use in or near the eyes.
Drug Interactions
Topical corticosteroids
May reduce the antifungal activity of clotrimazole if applied simultaneously. Allow time between applications.
Other topical antifungals
Avoid concurrent use unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application of clotrimazole. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clotrimazole 1% cream is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation due to minimal systemic absorption. However, consult a doctor before use.
