Description
Overview of the medicine
Colimax 0.6 mg Tablet contains Atropine Sulfate, an anticholinergic and antispasmodic agent used to relieve various symptoms associated with smooth muscle spasms, particularly in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. It can also be used in certain ophthalmic and cardiac conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical oral dose for antispasmodic effect: 0.3 mg to 1.2 mg every 4 to 6 hours. For Colimax 0.6 mg: one tablet 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, titrate carefully due to increased sensitivity and potential for CNS side effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment due to renal excretion.
How to Take
Colimax 0.6 mg Tablet should be taken orally with water, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare professional.
Mechanism of Action
Atropine Sulfate acts as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. By blocking these receptors, it inhibits the action of acetylcholine, leading to relaxation of smooth muscles, decreased glandular secretions, and other anticholinergic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 30-60 minutes; IV: minutes.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion, 30-50% as unchanged drug within 12 hours.
Half life
Approximately 2 to 4 hours, varies with age.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Hepatic metabolism, primarily hydrolysis, but significant portion excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to atropine or any component of the formulation.
- •Glaucoma (especially narrow-angle glaucoma).
- •Prostatic hypertrophy or other obstructive uropathy.
- •Paralytic ileus, pyloric stenosis, or other obstructive gastrointestinal diseases.
- •Myasthenia gravis (except when used to counteract muscarinic effects of anticholinesterases).
- •Tachycardia secondary to cardiac insufficiency or thyrotoxicosis.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease atropine absorption if taken concurrently. Administer atropine at least 1 hour before antacids.
Potassium chloride oral tablets
Atropine may increase the risk of GI lesions due to slowed GI motility.
Antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, quinidine, disopyramide
Increased anticholinergic effects.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include dry mouth, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, photophobia, hot and dry skin, fever, rapid pulse, urinary retention, bowel obstruction, and CNS effects (excitement, confusion, delirium, coma). Treatment is supportive, potentially involving physostigmine as an antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Atropine is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers due to potential anticholinergic effects on the infant and reduction in milk production.
