Description
Overview of the medicine
Coralcin-D is a combined supplement of Calcium and Vitamin D3, used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, and to maintain healthy bones.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by the physician. Should be taken with food for better absorption.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor calcium levels closely, especially in those with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required. Contraindicated in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole with water, preferably with meals.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) helps regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism, facilitating their absorption from the gut and deposition into bone tissue.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects are gradual, not immediate.
Excretion
Calcium is excreted primarily via kidneys and feces. Vitamin D3 metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Calcium: Varies. Vitamin D3: Parent compound ~24 hours, active metabolite calcitriol ~3-5 days.
Absorption
Calcium absorption is mainly in the small intestine, about 20-30% of ingested dose. Vitamin D3 is absorbed in the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum and ileum, then metabolized in the liver and kidney.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized in the classic sense. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia
- Hypercalciuria
- Severe renal impairment
- Known hypersensitivity to calcium, vitamin D, or any excipients
Drug Interactions

Calcium may reduce iron absorption; take separately.
Cardiac glycosides
May increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Bisphosphonates and Levothyroxine
Absorption may be reduced; take at least 30-60 minutes apart.
Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce their absorption; take at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
