Description
Overview of the medicine
Coralcin-DV is a nutritional supplement containing Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, primarily used to treat and prevent calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, and to support bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician. May be taken in divided doses.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dosage may be adjusted based on individual needs and vitamin D levels. Higher vitamin D intake may be required.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary depending on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Regular monitoring is recommended.
How to Take
Oral administration. Tablets can be taken with or without food. For better absorption, it is often recommended to take calcium supplements with food.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone formation, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and many other physiological functions. Vitamin D3 helps regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism, enhancing calcium absorption in the gut and facilitating its utilization in the body, particularly for bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
While biochemical effects may begin relatively soon, significant effects on bone mineral density are observed over several weeks to months of continuous use.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via the kidneys and feces. Vitamin D3 and its metabolites are mainly excreted via bile and feces, with a small portion excreted renally.
Half life
Elemental calcium does not have a distinct half-life. Vitamin D3 has an initial half-life of about 24 hours, but can be stored in adipose tissue and released slowly over weeks to months.
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, with absorption efficiency increased by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and requires bile salts for optimal absorption.
Metabolism
Calcium is not extensively metabolized. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcidiol) and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin D3, or any component of the formulation
- Hypercalcemia (abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood)
- Hypercalciuria (abnormally high levels of calcium in the urine)
- Severe renal impairment or kidney stones
- Primary hyperparathyroidism
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Hypercalcemia can increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. Monitor closely if co-administered.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with bisphosphonate absorption. Take calcium at a different time of day.
Corticosteroids
May reduce calcium absorption.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia by decreasing renal calcium excretion.
Tetracycline and Quinolone antibiotics
Calcium can chelate these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Administer calcium at least 2-3 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose primarily relate to hypercalcemia (excess calcium in the blood), which may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental confusion, polydipsia, polyuria, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias and coma. Management involves discontinuing the supplement, hydrating with intravenous fluids, and in some cases, using loop diuretics or corticosteroids to reduce calcium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Coralcin-DV is generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D demands for both mother and baby. However, always consult with a healthcare provider before use to determine appropriate dosage.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Calcium and Vitamin D have been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials demonstrating their efficacy in preventing and treating bone-related disorders. Specific trials for Coralcin-DV would confirm bioavailability and comparative efficacy.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (especially during long-term therapy or in patients with renal impairment)
- Serum vitamin D levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D)
- Renal function tests (e.g., serum creatinine, eGFR) for patients with existing kidney issues or on long-term therapy
- Urinary calcium excretion (if hypercalciuria is suspected)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of adequate fluid intake to patients.
- Advise patients about potential drug interactions, especially with iron supplements, tetracyclines, and quinolones; recommend staggered dosing.
- Counsel patients on lifestyle modifications for optimal bone health, including diet, exercise, and sunlight exposure.
- Regularly monitor serum calcium levels in patients with pre-existing conditions or on high-dose/long-term therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed or directed on the label.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose without consulting a doctor.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake while taking this supplement.
- If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Coralcin-DV is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. No special precautions are generally required.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercises to support bone health.
- Ensure adequate exposure to sunlight for natural vitamin D synthesis, while also protecting against harmful UV rays.
- Limit excessive alcohol and caffeine intake.
- Avoid smoking, as it can negatively impact bone density.
