Description
Overview of the medicine
Coralvit D is a combination supplement containing Coral Calcium and Vitamin D3. It is used to maintain healthy bones, prevent osteoporosis, and support calcium absorption in the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by the physician. It is recommended to take with or after meals.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but with caution regarding renal function and potential for hypercalcemia.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Contraindicated in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, preferably with or immediately after a meal to enhance absorption and reduce potential stomach upset.
Mechanism of Action
Coral Calcium provides elemental calcium necessary for bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve function, and other metabolic processes. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) enhances the absorption of calcium from the intestine and regulates calcium-phosphate homeostasis, contributing to proper bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, effects on bone health are typically observed over weeks to months of consistent use.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces, with a smaller amount via urine. Vitamin D metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and feces.
Half life
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) has a half-life of several days, while its active metabolite, calcitriol, has a half-life of about 3-6 hours. Calcium is constantly exchanged and regulated.
Absorption
Calcium absorption varies and is enhanced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum and ileum.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidneys to its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense but is involved in various physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- Severe renal impairment or kidney stones (calcium-containing)
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with absorption; administer at least 30 minutes apart.
Corticosteroids
May reduce calcium absorption.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
May increase the risk of arrhythmias.
Tetracyclines & Quinolone antibiotics
Calcium can reduce their absorption; administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, confusion, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. Management involves discontinuing the product, rehydration, and medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation

- Monitoring of 24-hour urinary calcium excretion may be advised.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the importance of dietary sources of calcium and vitamin D.
- Educate about signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia and when to seek medical attention.
- Consider baseline and periodic monitoring of serum calcium and vitamin D levels, especially in high-risk patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet as directed by your physician or pharmacist.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and get adequate sunlight exposure.
