Description
Overview of the medicine
Corbic-500 mg tablet contains Ascorbic Acid, commonly known as Vitamin C, which is an essential vitamin crucial for various bodily functions. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, supports immune function, aids in collagen synthesis, and helps in iron absorption. It is used to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) and to boost overall health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For vitamin C deficiency, 250-1000 mg daily in divided doses. For general health and antioxidant purposes, 500 mg daily or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dose with caution, as high doses may increase the risk of oxalate stone formation. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Orally, preferably with food to minimize gastric upset. Can be taken with water.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant by readily donating electrons to free radicals, protecting cells from oxidative damage. It is a cofactor for several enzymatic reactions, including those involved in collagen synthesis, carnitine synthesis, and neurotransmitter synthesis. It also enhances non-heme iron absorption by reducing ferric iron to ferrous iron in the gut.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Excreted renally (via kidneys), primarily as unchanged ascorbic acid and its metabolites, when plasma concentrations exceed the renal threshold. Excess amounts are rapidly excreted.
Half life
Approximately 16 days in healthy individuals, but can vary depending on tissue saturation and excretion.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the upper small intestine. Absorption decreases with increasing dose due to saturation of active transport mechanisms. Bioavailability is high at typical doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive metabolites, primarily in the liver, including dehydroascorbic acid, 2,3-diketogulonic acid, and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- •Patients with hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders (high doses)
- •Patients with hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones (high doses)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may potentially decrease anticoagulant effect, although clinical significance is uncertain.
Deferoxamine
May increase iron toxicity, especially cardiotoxicity. Administer at least 2 hours after deferoxamine.
Oral contraceptives
May lower vitamin C levels.
Aluminum-containing antacids
May increase aluminum absorption, especially in renal insufficiency. Separate administration times.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), headache, and fatigue. In rare cases, very high doses may lead to kidney stone formation or increased iron absorption. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Discontinue use and consult a physician.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe in recommended doses during pregnancy and lactation. High doses should be avoided unless medically necessary. Consult a physician before use.
