Description
Overview of the medicine
Costa-B 100 mg Tablet contains Thiamine Hydrochloride, also known as Vitamin B1. It is essential for carbohydrate metabolism, nerve function, and heart health. It is used to prevent and treat thiamine deficiency conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild deficiency: 10-25 mg daily. For severe deficiency (Beriberi): 100 mg daily for several weeks, then 5-10 mg daily. Dosage may vary based on physician's advice.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; no specific dose adjustment required unless significant renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Generally, no dose adjustment is necessary for thiamine as it is water-soluble and excreted renally. However, caution is advised in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, with or without food. Follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
Mechanism of Action
Thiamine, as thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), acts as a coenzyme in several metabolic pathways, particularly in carbohydrate metabolism. It is crucial for the oxidative decarboxylation of alpha-keto acids (e.g., pyruvate) and for the transketolase reaction in the pentose phosphate pathway, which generates NADPH and precursors for nucleic acid biosynthesis. This role is vital for energy production and proper cellular function, especially in nerve and muscle cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may be observed within hours to days depending on the severity of deficiency.
Excretion
Excreted in the urine as metabolites or unchanged thiamine, primarily within 4-6 hours after administration.
Half life
The biological half-life is approximately 9-18 days, but it is rapidly turned over in the body with a half-life of 4-10 hours in plasma.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the duodenum, via an active transport mechanism at low concentrations and passive diffusion at higher concentrations. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and other active metabolites. Excess thiamine is not stored significantly.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Thiamine or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Chronic alcohol consumption impairs thiamine absorption and utilization, increasing deficiency risk.
Fluorouracil
May increase thiamine deficiency by interfering with thiamine metabolism.
Antacids (high dose)
May reduce thiamine absorption.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Thiamine has very low toxicity. Excess amounts are readily excreted in the urine. Serious adverse effects from oral overdose are rare. Symptoms might include mild gastrointestinal upset or skin reactions. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Thiamine is considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when taken at recommended doses. It is an essential vitamin, and requirements may increase during these periods. Consult your doctor before use.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Thiamine has been extensively studied for its role in preventing and treating deficiency syndromes. Numerous clinical trials have confirmed its efficacy in conditions like Beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, demonstrating its crucial role in human health.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not typically required for individuals taking thiamine supplements. In cases of severe deficiency, plasma thiamine levels or erythrocyte transketolase activity can be measured to confirm diagnosis and monitor treatment effectiveness.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of addressing underlying causes of thiamine deficiency (e.g., alcoholism, malnutrition).
- Consider parenteral thiamine for severe deficiency or Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
- Educate patients on dietary sources of thiamine.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as indicated on the package.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Inform your doctor if you experience any unusual side effects or if your symptoms do not improve.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Costa-B 100 mg Tablet is not known to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. You can drive or operate machinery if you feel well.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in whole grains, legumes, nuts, and lean meats to ensure adequate thiamine intake.
- Limit alcohol consumption, as it can interfere with thiamine absorption and metabolism.
