Cromolyn sodium ophthalmic solution is used to prevent and relieve symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis by stabilizing mast cells and inhibiting mediator release. It is typically used for conditions like allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis.

Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops in each eye 4-6 times daily at regular intervals. Continued use is recommended for prophylactic effect.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients; same as adult dosage.

How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after use. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pocket, and instill drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Cromolyn sodium is a mast cell stabilizer that prevents the release of inflammatory mediators (such as histamine, leukotrienes) from mast cells following exposure to allergens. It acts prophylactically by stabilizing the mast cell membrane, thereby inhibiting degranulation and the subsequent release of these inflammatory substances. It does not possess direct antihistaminic or anti-inflammatory properties.
