Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetirizine 10 mg Tablet is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and also for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily, or 5 mg twice daily. Maximum 10 mg/day.
Elderly
No dosage reduction needed unless renal impairment is present. Consider 5 mg once daily if renal function is reduced.
Renal_impairment
Moderate renal impairment (CrCl 31-50 mL/min): 5 mg once daily. Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min): 5 mg every other day. End-stage renal disease (CrCl < 10 mL/min): Contraindicated.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day, but often preferred in the evening due to potential drowsiness.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and highly selective H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (approximately 60%) and feces (approximately 10%).
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours in adults, longer in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism; a major portion is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- Patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl < 10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
A minor decrease in cetirizine clearance has been observed with concomitant use, though not clinically significant at typical doses.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants
May increase drowsiness and impair performance.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C), away from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, tachycardia, tremor, and headache. Treatment is largely symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
