Overview of the medicine
Cyclovex-3 Eye Ointment contains Acyclovir, an antiviral agent, used to treat eye infections caused by the herpes simplex virus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a 1 cm ribbon of ointment into the lower conjunctival sac 5 times daily at approximately 4-hour intervals while awake. Continue treatment for 14 days or until healing is complete.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after application. Pull down the lower eyelid, apply a thin strip of ointment into the conjunctival sac. Close eye gently for a few moments. Do not touch the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral DNA replication by competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase, ultimately terminating the DNA chain.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local antiviral effect observed within hours, clinical improvement typically within days.
Excretion
Primarily local clearance; negligible systemic excretion.
Half life
Not clinically significant for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption (systemic half-life 2.5-3.3 hours).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic application. Primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism. Locally converted to active triphosphate form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir, Valacyclovir, or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with known allergy to similar antiviral agents.
Drug Interactions
Systemic drugs
Due to minimal systemic absorption, clinically significant drug interactions are unlikely with systemic medications.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Due to minimal systemic absorption, overdose from topical ophthalmic application is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should only be considered if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor before use.
