Description
Overview of the medicine
D-Cap 1000 IU capsule contains Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), which is essential for calcium absorption and bone health. It is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Vitamin D deficiency: 1000-2000 IU daily. For severe deficiency, higher doses may be prescribed by a doctor.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; however, some elderly individuals may require higher doses due to reduced skin synthesis and absorption.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; monitoring of calcium and phosphate levels is advised. Doses may need adjustment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food, but absorption is better with a meal containing fat.
Mechanism of Action
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from the gut. It also plays a crucial role in bone mineralization, immune function, and cell growth.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Several weeks for full effect on bone mineralization and calcium levels, though initial biochemical changes may occur earlier.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in bile and feces; a small amount is excreted in urine.
Half life
The half-life of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is approximately 15-30 days.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the small intestine in the presence of bile salts; absorption may be impaired in malabsorption syndromes.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cholecalciferol or any component of the formulation
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Hypervitaminosis D (excess vitamin D levels)
- Severe renal impairment with hyperphosphatemia
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids
May reduce the effect of Vitamin D.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Barbiturates
May increase Vitamin D metabolism, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Orlistat, Mineral oil
May reduce absorption of Vitamin D.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, thirst, polyuria, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue). Treatment involves discontinuing Vitamin D, reducing calcium intake, and hydration. In severe cases, corticosteroids or calcitonin may be used.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be avoided due to potential risks of hypercalcemia in the fetus or infant.
