Description
Overview of the medicine
Delacin 100 mg Capsule contains Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including serious anaerobic infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain respiratory tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For serious infections, 150-300 mg every 6-8 hours. For more severe infections, 300-450 mg every 6-8 hours. Dosage for Delacin 100mg capsule would be 1-3 capsules every 6-8 hours as directed by the physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required based solely on age, but monitor renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary in mild to moderate renal impairment. In severe renal impairment, dosage adjustment may be considered, but hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing clindamycin.
How to Take
Delacin capsules should be taken orally. They can be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water to prevent esophageal irritation.
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. It is primarily bacteriostatic but may be bactericidal at higher concentrations against highly susceptible organisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 1 hour for oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via urine (about 10%) and feces (about 3.6%) as active drug and metabolites. Approximately two-thirds of the dose is excreted in the bile and feces.
Half life
2-3 hours; may be prolonged in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 90% bioavailability). Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 45-60 minutes after oral administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to active (N-demethyl clindamycin) and inactive metabolites. Major metabolic pathways include N-demethylation and sulfoxidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any component of the formulation
- History of antibiotic-associated colitis
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
Antagonism between clindamycin and erythromycin has been demonstrated in vitro; these drugs should not be administered concurrently.
Kaolin-pectin
May decrease the absorption of clindamycin; separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; additional birth control methods may be necessary.
Neuromuscular blocking agents
Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties and may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents (e.g., succinylcholine, vecuronium).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. There is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective in removing clindamycin from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Clindamycin is excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

YesClinical Trials
Clindamycin has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for treating various bacterial infections. Ongoing research continues to explore its applications and resistance patterns.
Lab Monitoring
- Liver and kidney function tests (periodically during prolonged therapy)
- Complete blood counts (periodically during prolonged therapy)
- Stool test for Clostridium difficile toxin if severe diarrhea develops
Doctor Notes
- Confirm the presence of a bacterial infection before prescribing Clindamycin; it is not effective against viral infections.
- Educate patients about the risk of C. difficile-associated diarrhea and advise them to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
- Consider liver and kidney function monitoring during prolonged therapy, especially in patients with pre-existing impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
- Report any severe or persistent diarrhea to your doctor immediately, as it could be a sign of a serious condition (C. difficile-associated diarrhea).
- Take capsules with a full glass of water to avoid esophageal irritation.
- Do not share this medication with others, as it may not be suitable for their condition.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Clindamycin is generally not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or other side effects that impair your concentration, avoid these activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of infection.
- Stay well-hydrated, especially if experiencing diarrhea.
