Description
Overview of the medicine
Dexlansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux, and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to heal erosive esophagitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For healing EE: 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks. For maintenance of EE: 30 mg or 60 mg once daily. For symptomatic GERD: 30 mg once daily for up to 4 weeks.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary based on age alone, but caution with concomitant diseases and medications.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for renal impairment.
How to Take
Swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew or crush. Can be taken with or without food. If unable to swallow, capsule can be opened and contents mixed with applesauce.
Mechanism of Action
Dexlansoprazole is an irreversible proton pump inhibitor that blocks the final step in gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component of the formulation
- Concomitant use with rilpivirine-containing products
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased INR/prothrombin time; monitor closely.
Clopidogrel
Reduced antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel; consider alternative PPI.
Methotrexate
Increased plasma levels of methotrexate; temporary PPI discontinuation may be needed for high-dose methotrexate.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture.
Overdose
No specific antidote. Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended.
