Description
Overview of the medicine
Delosia 5 mg Tablet is an antidepressant medication primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and certain other mood conditions. It helps restore the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which can improve mood and feelings of well-being.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 5 mg once daily, preferably in the morning, with or without food. May be increased to 10 mg after 1 week based on response and tolerability. Maximum recommended dose is 20 mg daily.
Elderly
Initial dose 5 mg once daily. Dose titration should be gradual and carefully monitored. Maximum recommended dose is 10 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Delosia tablets should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Delosetin selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) into presynaptic neurons, thereby increasing the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. This leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system, which is believed to contribute to its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may begin within 1-2 weeks, but full effect can take 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine (approximately 60%) and feces (approximately 35%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 24-36 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 4-8 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via CYP450 enzymes (e.g., CYP2D6, CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to delosetin or any component of the formulation.
- Concomitant use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI.
- Concomitant use with pimozide.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal. Avoid concomitant use.
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing bleeding risk.
NSAIDs/Aspirin
Increased risk of bleeding, especially gastrointestinal.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
May increase plasma levels of TCAs, requiring dose adjustment.
Other serotonergic drugs (e.g., triptans, tramadol)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, tremor, and dizziness. Rarely, serotonin syndrome, seizures, or coma can occur. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, including maintaining an open airway, cardiac and vital sign monitoring, and activated charcoal administration if appropriate.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Delosetin is excreted in human milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

- No routine lab monitoring is generally required. However, liver function tests may be considered in patients with pre-existing hepatic impairment. Electrolyte levels, particularly sodium, may be monitored in elderly patients or those on diuretics.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on the delayed onset of antidepressant effect and the importance of continued treatment.
- Monitor for emergent suicidality, especially at the initiation of treatment or during dose adjustments.
- Advise gradual tapering of the dose upon discontinuation to minimize withdrawal symptoms.
