Description
Overview of the medicine
Dermaskin cream is a topical medication combining a potent corticosteroid (Betamethasone), an aminoglycoside antibiotic (Gentamicin), and an antifungal agent (Miconazole). It is used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions complicated by secondary bacterial and/or fungal infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Do not use for more than 7 days without medical review.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed, use with caution due to thinner skin.
Renal_impairment
Minimal systemic absorption, unlikely to require dosage adjustment.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after application. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and gently rub in. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone reduces inflammation and itching by inhibiting phospholipase A2. Gentamicin acts as a broad-spectrum antibiotic by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Miconazole inhibits fungal ergosterol synthesis, disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours for anti-inflammatory effect.
Excretion
Mainly renal for systemically absorbed components.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application, systemic half-life of components vary.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption, but can be increased with occlusive dressings or on damaged skin.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic for systemically absorbed components.

Overdose
Topical overdose is rare. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to local side effects (e.g., skin thinning) or systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome symptoms). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
