Description
Overview of the medicine
Dermasoft-2-w-ointment is a topical preparation containing Urea, primarily used to moisturize, soften, and smooth rough, dry, or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. Urea is a keratolytic agent that helps to break down dead skin cells and promote skin hydration.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to affected areas of skin once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. Gently rub in until absorbed.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No special dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required for topical application.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to clean, dry skin. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Urea works as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin, and as a keratolytic agent, breaking down the bonds of dead skin cells (keratinocytes) in the stratum corneum, thereby reducing hyperkeratosis and making the skin smoother. It also enhances the penetration of other topical agents.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Moisturizing effect within minutes; keratolytic effects noticeable after several days to weeks of regular use.
Excretion
Mainly through kidneys if systemically absorbed, but primarily remains on the skin surface or is slowly sloughed off.
Half life
Not well characterized for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may increase with broken skin or prolonged use over large areas.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed urea is metabolized in the liver to ammonia and excreted by the kidneys; however, topical absorption is negligible.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Urea or any other component of the ointment
- Acute inflammatory skin conditions with weeping or open wounds (unless advised by a doctor)
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids
Urea may enhance the penetration of corticosteroids; use with caution.
Other topical preparations
Concurrent use with other topical medications may alter absorption or efficacy. Consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Excessive application may lead to localized skin irritation (redness, burning, stinging). If ingested, seek medical attention immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation, as systemic absorption is minimal. However, consult a healthcare professional before use.
