Description
Overview of the medicine
Desocort 0.025% Cream is a low-potency topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, itching, and redness caused by various skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film of Desocort 0.025% Cream to the affected skin areas two to three times daily, as directed by a physician. Rub in gently and completely.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but use with caution due to potentially thinner skin and increased susceptibility to side effects.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for topical application, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical dermatologic use only. Do not use orally, ophthalmically, or intravaginally. Wash hands before and after application. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently.
Mechanism of Action
Desonide, like other corticosteroids, acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects typically begin within hours to a few days of initiation of treatment.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily excreted by the kidneys. Small amounts may be excreted in the bile.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not precisely determined for topical application due to minimal absorption. When absorbed, corticosteroids are metabolized and excreted.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs through intact skin. Absorption may be increased by occlusion, inflammation, or disease states of the skin, and in children.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites. Any systemically absorbed desonide follows the metabolic pathways of other corticosteroids.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to desonide or any components of the cream.
- Primary cutaneous viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella).
- Fungal or bacterial skin infections not adequately treated.
- Rosacea and perioral dermatitis.
Drug Interactions
None significant
Due to minimal systemic absorption with topical use, clinically significant drug-drug interactions are unlikely.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Topically applied Desocort 0.025% Cream can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects, although rare with normal use. Signs of chronic overdose include Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids can result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. Use with caution in nursing mothers.
