Description
Overview of the medicine
Desopil-30 is a progestogen-only oral contraceptive containing 0.03 mg of Desogestrel. It is primarily used for contraception and is suitable for women who cannot take oestrogens.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One tablet daily, taken at the same time each day, without interruption, even during menstrual bleeding. Start on the first day of menstruation.
Elderly
Not indicated for post-menopausal women. No specific dose adjustment for elderly women of reproductive age.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take one tablet orally at approximately the same time every day. Tablets must be taken continuously, regardless of bleeding or spotting.
Mechanism of Action
Desogestrel primarily works by thickening cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and by suppressing ovulation in some women. It also causes changes in the endometrium, making it unsuitable for implantation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Contraceptive effect begins after 7 days of consistent use (if started on day 1-5 of cycle).
Excretion
Excreted as metabolites primarily via urine and feces.
Half life
Approximately 25-30 hours (active metabolite etonogestrel).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 1.5-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to its active metabolite etonogestrel, then to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known or suspected pregnancy
- •Active venous thromboembolism
- •Severe liver disease
- •Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- •Known or suspected sex hormone-sensitive malignancies
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir, Nelfinavir (HIV medications)
May affect Desogestrel metabolism.
Certain antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Tetracycline)
May potentially reduce efficacy, though evidence is less conclusive for POPs. Consider additional barrier method.
Enzyme inducers (e.g., Rifampicin, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Barbiturates, St. John's Wort)
May decrease the contraceptive efficacy of Desogestrel.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, and slight vaginal bleeding in young girls. Management is symptomatic and supportive. No specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during pregnancy. Can be used during lactation as Desogestrel does not appear to adversely affect breast milk production or infant health.
