Description
Overview of the medicine
Dexamox eye drop is a combination of Moxifloxacin (a fluoroquinolone antibiotic) and Dexamethasone (a corticosteroid). It is used to treat bacterial eye infections and reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. The treatment duration typically ranges from 5 to 7 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment with ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Squeeze a single drop into the pocket. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface. Close eyes gently for 1-2 minutes. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death. Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that suppresses the inflammatory response by inhibiting various inflammatory mediators, thus reducing swelling, redness, and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects may be observed within a few hours.
Excretion
Excretion routes for systemically absorbed components would be renal and hepatic, but local clearance predominates for ophthalmic use.
Half life
Not precisely characterized for ophthalmic use; local effects are prolonged.
Absorption
Following topical ocular administration, Moxifloxacin and Dexamethasone are absorbed locally. Systemic absorption is minimal but can occur.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism expected with ophthalmic administration.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, Dexamethasone, or any components of the formulation.
- •Viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella).
- •Mycobacterial infections of the eye.
- •Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If more than one topical ophthalmic medication is being used, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive ocular exposure, flush the eyes with copious amounts of water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
