Description
Overview of the medicine
Diavir 2 mg tablet is an antiviral medication used to treat certain viral infections by inhibiting viral replication.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2 mg orally three times daily for 7-10 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function; consult physician.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dose to 2 mg once daily for severe impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Diavir is a nucleoside analogue that is phosphorylated intracellularly to its active triphosphate form. This active metabolite competes with natural nucleoside triphosphates for incorporation into viral DNA/RNA, leading to chain termination and inhibition of viral DNA/RNA polymerase, thus preventing viral replication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with bioavailability of approximately 60-70%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver into its active triphosphate form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Diavir or any excipients
- Severe hepatic impairment
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase Diavir plasma concentrations due to competition for renal tubular secretion.
Nephrotoxic drugs
Coadministration with other nephrotoxic agents may increase the risk of renal dysfunction.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and renal dysfunction. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
