Description
Overview of the medicine
Dicot 0.1% Cream contains betamethasone valerate, a potent corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It reduces redness, swelling, and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily, as directed by the physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use with caution for prolonged periods.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for topical use.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply thinly and gently rub into the affected area. Do not cover with occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone valerate acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours to a few days of application.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application; systemic half-life of absorbed betamethasone is 5-6 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption, but varies with skin integrity and application area.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites if systemically absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to betamethasone or any component of the cream
- •Untreated cutaneous fungal, bacterial, or viral infections
- •Acne vulgaris
- •Rosacea
- •Perioral dermatitis
- •Pruritus without inflammation
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 Inhibitors
Coadministration with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may increase systemic exposure to corticosteroids, but significant interaction is rare with topical use.
Other Topical Preparations
Avoid applying other topical preparations to the same area simultaneously without medical advice.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical use. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to systemic effects such as Cushing's syndrome or adrenal suppression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
